What does the root of a chord mean?

The root is the note a chord is named after and built from. A 'C Major' chord has C as its root — every other note in the chord (the third, the fifth, and so on) is measured as an interval up from that C. Change the root and you keep the same chord shape but on a new anchor note (D Major, F# Major, etc.).

How does key type change which chords I can use?

A key (like C Major, or A Natural Minor) is defined by a scale — a specific pattern of whole steps and half steps. Each degree of that scale is the root of a naturally-occurring 'diatonic' chord, and the scale's pattern decides whether that chord comes out Major, Minor, or Diminished. Change the key type from Major to Natural Minor and every diatonic chord shifts quality, which is why the same numeral (I, ii, V…) sounds different in each key type.

Why is a chord Major or Minor?

The third — the second note of the triad — decides. A Major third is 4 semitones above the root (bright, uplifting). A Minor third is 3 semitones (darker, introspective). The fifth is the same in both. That single semitone of difference between a major and minor third is the entire emotional flip.

What makes a chord Diminished or Augmented?

The fifth does the work. A Diminished chord flattens the fifth by a semitone on top of a Minor third — two stacked minor thirds, tense and unresolved. An Augmented chord raises the fifth by a semitone on top of a Major third — two stacked major thirds, dreamy and directionless. Both are symmetrical, which is why they don't clearly belong to any one key.

How do roman numerals relate to root and key?

Roman numerals (I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, vii°) name chords by their position in the key rather than by their letter root — I is the tonic, V is the fifth-degree chord, and so on. Uppercase means Major, lowercase means Minor, and ° means Diminished. The huge advantage: I–V–vi–IV is 'the same progression' in C, G, or D — only the roman numerals stay constant when you transpose.

Why do some chords sound more stable?

The tonic (I chord) is home — everything else is heard relative to it, so it feels resolved. The dominant (V) sits a fifth above the tonic and contains a tritone (in dominant-7th form) that strongly pulls back to I; that pull is what we hear as tension wanting release. Composers use this push-and-pull between stable and unstable chords to create motion — the drama of most Western music is tension → release.

Does the same progression always sound like the same genre?

Accepted Answer

No. Harmony is only one ingredient. I–V–vi–IV can be a stadium pop anthem, a country ballad, a punk chorus, or a lo-fi loop — the genre is decided just as much by tempo, groove, instrumentation, production, timbre, and dynamics. Genre Matcher tells you which genres commonly use a given progression; it can't tell you which one you're writing until you play it.
